Saturday 20 April
J's ankle is still very sore and holding her back from activities that involve much walking. Also it is pack up time as we leave Hotel de Latour-Mauborg today so there is suitcase sorting required.
Anyway I took the opportuunity to desert her and visit the Promenade Plantee near the Bastille. This involved a lengthy metro trip as for some reason I failed to take the direct option and was forced to ride around for a while looking at the system and being impressed by the stations.
The PP is a garden built (in part) on an abandoned section of railway viaduct. The result is a very attractive elevated garden walk that extends several kilometres and gives great views of the quarter.
I found further evidence of the advanced civilisation prevalent in Paris in this notice. Basically the message is that the garden is for walking - jogging will be tolerated but only if it doesn't get in the way of the walkers!
Even the arches of the viaduct have found another use and been turned into trendy art & craft shops.
So don't chuck out your old railway viaducts just yet!
P.S. No, I don't know what happened to the old signals - they may well be adorning a museum or living room somewhere...
